Special Diets for Special Kids, Two
by Lisa Lewis
Amazon Price: $19.47
Customer Review: This is a great cookbook for any parent who has a child on the GF/CF diet.
Just Take a Bite
by Lori Ernsperger, Tania Stegen-Hanson
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: This book offers simple solutions that may help parents of children with straightforward eating problems. It does not reflect the potential complexity of these problems and is unlikely to offer support to those with the most serious problems
Making Plant Medicine
by Richo Cech
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: This is definitely a must have book for anyone who wishes to make tinctures. The instructions are clear and concise. Also, if you wish to make salves you will find simple instructions.
Comic Strip Conversations
by Carol Gray
Amazon Price: $9.95
Customer Review: I expected this book to be more educational and informative. It really just gives you a couple templates and not that many ideas, you do the work on your own. You do not need this book to create your own comic strip.
Autism Aspergers: Solving the Relationship Puzzle--A New Developmental Progra...
by Steven E. Gutstein
Amazon Price: $23.07
Customer Review: RDI enables the child to move from the self-imposed safety of a static system of his/her own making to engagement in the fluid world at large. The steps are based on the developmental stages of a normal childs venturing into world while he/she looks to the caregiver for support and referencing. The child on the autism spectrum ventures out until the world becomes confusing and chaotic and because he/she does not look back at the caregiver for a broadening understanding becomes overwhelmed and retreats into stimms or idiosyncratic habits to create a static, safe or predicatable environment. The child looks odd as he/she is not engaged in the fluidity life. The words static and fluid or big with RDI as the idea is the child is constantly controlling his/her environment to block out anything which might change the order they seek. The step by step process of RDI is a very optimistic idea in action as it can be used with a 2 year old or an older more entrenched Aspergers child with defined obsessions for example - basically it doesn't matter the treatment begins with breaking into the child's stimm or obsessions in a playful fashion to make them used to the interruptions of their solo activities. This is pretreatment then the program moves through levels based on developmental stages. Level 1 for example is about co-ordination and self referencing with the care giver and the child is never allowed to move forward without the caregiver right there step by step - this is a back and forth relationship play level, based on facial gazing for information - infact avoiding language at this stage is very important as the child should learn to read anothers face at this point the caregiver says "I need to see your words" - once the child has mastered back and forth - gaze reading and shared joint attention it progresses to shared novel interactions that involve spontanity, a higher level of emotional attunement and fluidity. The goal is for the child to become an initiator and to become adept at keeping co-ordination when actions and reactions grow more complicated. I believe this program is a neccessary component to any intensive program with developmentally disabled children as ABA only goes so far - ABA is great at working with these kids excellent memories to teach rote skills - but it does not provide for the rich experience of life which can not be predicted and which gives life meaning. Lynn Koegal at UCSB discovered looking back over her 20 years of videos tha...
Autism - Asperger's and Sexuality: Puberty and Beyond
by Jerry Newport, Mary Newport
Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: I appreciate the frankness which the author has decided to 'out' himself as a person with autism. This book tackles many areas which are still considered taboo for people with disabilities to know about.
Society still has hang ups thinking of people with disabilities as autonomous sexual beings. It wants to instead pretend that we are dependent children-vegetables. Even some so-called radical friends have become shocked to learn that people with disabilities participate in and enjoy sex.
Addressing people with disabilities as the primary audience will effectively help to shatter these stereotypes--although the title is also a good read for our families and friends.
However, as a heterosexual ally, I also must concur that he needed to include information on GLBT people--and avoid stereotypes. Because all people with disabilities are also outsiders to the status quo, such a limited and unfortunately one-dimensional view of sexuality is especially shocking and inappropriate.
It's great he acknowledges people with disabilities as being sexual beings, but then he seems to contradict himself by not giving adequate information when he had set out to write a book which was theoretically supposed to provide just that. Hopefully this issue will be resolved in future editions.
Sweet Poison: How the World's Most Popular Artificial Sweetener Is Killing Us...
by Janet Starr Hull
Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: The highly toxic sweetener known as Aspartame (pronounced 'as-PAR-tame' in Standard English) urgently needs to be banned worldwide. It's unfit for human consumption and has no business being in the food chain.
When warning of its dangers there's a risk of being perceived as some kind of zealous missionary who's hell-bent on 'proselytising' one's family and friends. You can be perceived as someone with a 'hang-up' about one particular additive. A friend of mine visited his niece's house and was offered a fizzy drink. When he started to read the ingredients on the bottle his niece remarked, "Oh no, you're going to lecture me about that sweetener that [this reviewer] is always on about!" Janet Starr Hull to the rescue! This excellent, well researched and tastefully produced book is all the ammunition you'll need. The subtitle alone sends shivers down people's spines.
The standard retort is, "well why is it 'officially approved' if it's so unsafe?". The sweeping of chimneys by 8 year-olds was once 'officially approved'. Did that make it safe? Or right? Even today, many unenlightened societies 'officially approve' workplace smoking. This exposes MILLIONS to the risks of lung cancer and ischemic heart disease. Governments who approve workplace smoking on the grounds of "civil liberties" are only buying themselves time. It's a stay of execution, no more. Some 30 years hence the next generation will marvel that we even debated such an open and shut case.
In 2008, Aspartame is probably where tobacco was in the mid-1970s. People are starting to wake up as the campaign to ban this deadly poison finally gathers momentum. Martin Luther King said "human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability". Janet Starr Hull is a champion and a heroine. If Amazon allowed it, I'd have given Sweet Poison SIX stars out of five!
Special Diets for Special People: Understanding and Implementing a Gluten-Fre...
by Lisa S Lewis
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: The GFCF diet may be difficult and kind of extreme but the author does a good job of simplifing it down to something not quite so overwhelming. It is packed with common sense advice to make living on the diet easier and manageable. It is written in a way as to not reproach parents for anything. I was very skeptical about our family's ability to follow this diet. This book makes me feel like not only can we do it but that it won't be all that difficult. Very helpful.
Loving Mr. Spock: Understanding an Aloof Lover: Could It Be Asperger's?
by Barbara Jacobs
Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: This book was brilliant in it's clearness right from the start on Aspergers and the way it manifests in people. Right from the beginning - I found myself going ... yes, that's my ex, and that, and that. Having someone else so clearly identify things was amazing. It is written from the perspective of someone who fell in love with someone with Aspergers and the things that happened. It helped me enormously understand 3 of my ex's who are on different levels with Aspergers. And 2 of whom I suspected. But my last one I was deeply baffled by for a long time until I had an inkling about Aspergers.
Like the writer of this book. I am also involved in psychology. But found it just baffling at times WHAT was actually going on. Things didn't fit together. I spent a long time puzzling over various things that just didn't gel on some level with my last man. 'One of these things does not go with the other'. A kind and caring man in many ways which yes, was one of the big attractions to him in the first place as others have also noted.
But when faced with me standing there with tears streaming down my cheeks. Told me to 'have a nice day'. In retrospect - I can see he knew he needed to say something 'nice' to make me feel better. So came up with a phrase that in his mind went with saying something nice. Totally inappropriate and yet funny in retrospect. But utterly unbelievable at the time it happened. Even when I said. I am standing here with tears streaming down my cheeks. Do you think I'm going to have a nice day? The confusion was very evident. It just didn't all go together for him. He'd been saying something he knew was 'nice'. Why didn't that work? Why did I have a problem with that?
This book I read cover to cover in one sitting. It covers so many things about Aspergers and from a non-clinical but still very informative viewpoint. I understood my whole relationship with my ex from start to finish with this book. It all just fell into place. A truly amazing book that is told with love I feel. Thank you.
