A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose (Oprah's Book Club, Selection 61)
by Eckhart Tolle
Amazon Price: $7.70
Customer Review: I am very glad that I purchased this book, then the audio book because it is so different than anything I've ever heard about spirituality. I am a Christian, so I had to have an open mind to listen and/or read it because it focuses on life and living in a very different way. I would recommend it to anyone, even if you find you don't agree with Eckhart Tolle's way of thinking, because it is still enlightening.
Eat This Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 3...
by David Zinczenko, Matt Goulding
Amazon Price: $10.97
Customer Review: This book references many restaurants that aren't anywhere around my area (and we have tons of restaurants). Its ok as a general topical guide on what types of foods may be better for you than others, but, I certainly wouldn't call it any kind of comprehensive collection. A lot of its pages are filled with pictures rather than words. Don't be taken in by all the hype this book has received. I think its just that.
The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life
by Arthur Agatston, Joseph Signorile
Amazon Price: $15.57
Customer Review: If you have never read The South Beach Diet, buy this book instead: It's much more helpful due to the exercise section and latest research on healthy eating and physical activity. If you already have a copy of The South Beach Diet, you need to buy this one as well so you can do the exercises.
I'm a big fan of The South Beach Diet. It helped me lose a lot of weight when nothing else worked. I felt comfortable losing the weight and looked great when I was done, rather than like a survivor of starvation. Whenever I gained a bit of weight since then, returning to Phase 1 quickly took it off.
But there was a problem: I clearly wasn't exercising enough. In the past, I've done a lot of walking and weight lifting . . . but I didn't get much benefit in terms of medical measures like reduced triglycerides. In fact, eating oatmeal and taking omega-3 supplements does more for my cholesterol level than exercise. I know that I need something different.
My eyes opened wide when I got to the section of this book that talked about how moderate amounts of walking (20 minutes every other day) with short intervals of fast movement spaced between moderate walking would do me more good for burning fat than doing all that walking that I used to do at one speed. Now, that sounded great!
Between walking days, you do some moderate body toning. Here is where I had some concerns about the book: The photographs show a lot of stress being put on the back. That's not a good idea for me: I have back problems. I'm not quite sure what to do, but I've ordered the DVD to see how these exercises are to be done and hope there will be detailed instructions there for people with bad backs.
In this book, Dr. Agatston does a good job of describing the various physical ills in joints and feet that baby boomers develop from the wrong kinds of activity and exercise. He even helped me understand how I create vast shoulder pain when I shovel snow the wrong way . . . and now I know what not to do.
If you are under 30, you can probably use this book just as is. If you are older, be careful with the body toning!
The remainder of the book is the same wonderful material on eating good carbs and good fats while avoiding bad carbs and bad fats . . . plus the latest validations of scientific research supporting the assumptions underlying the diet. There are lots of phase 1 and phase 2 recipes, and you can buy separate c...
A Thousand Splendid Suns
by Khaled Hosseini
Amazon Price: $15.57
Customer Review: I could not put this book down! The relationship between the two women is beautifully written. The tragic story is outweighed by the optimistic spirit. This was more than a good book. It is an instant classic that should be cherished for decades. I'm so thankful I took the time to read A Thousand Splendid Suns.
In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
by Michael Pollan
Amazon Price: $13.17
Customer Review: The best part of this book is the beginning, where the author explains the history of the western diet. Then he discredits modern nutrition scientists, or nutritionists as he calls them, putting them in the ranks of alchemists. Also he seems to accuse them of being colluded with the capitalist pigs running the modern food industry.
Then, he tries to speak with authority about isoflavones, omega-3, and other hard core nutrition knowledge, as if trying to be a nutritionist himself!
The end was the worst, almost unbearable, seriously suggesting that cultivating your lawn or whatever available land you have is a good way to solve the food problem. He becomes very critical, putting down people who "ONLY" take a couple weeks of vacation per year, unlike the French who know more about life than Americans. This was insensitive because, as self-employed that I am, I have not taken vacation in years...aboriginal people, whom he praises, did not take vacations either. In fact, vacations are a modern invention just like the western diet.
I started reading this book with enthusiasm. I liked how he took a step back to look a the whole picture from a broader perspective and shedding some light on how we have ended up where we are. I like his suggestions of avoiding processed food. But the book became gradually disappointing.
That a journalist is now rising as a nutritional authority with best sellers clearly underscores the sad state of confusion and misinformation about food. I was going to recommend it to my wife and some friends, but this book will probably best end up in the recycle bin.
The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
by Michael Pollan
Amazon Price: $9.60
Customer Review: Omnivore's Dilemma is a wonderfully written book which covers all aspects of food in today's world. Michael Pollan starts by taking a close look at industrial agriculture from the view point of Corn. A plant that is tailor made to our mass production, fossil fuel dependent agricultural ways. Corn farmers benefit from government subsidies that guarantee the farmer a minimum price per bushel. This has led to an overproduction of corn which has further led to corn based products inundating nearly every food shelf in today's supermarkets. Our farm animals are also raised on diets consisting largely of corn. Yet industrial corn farming, as the author explains, causes much harm. The rich fertile soil in the Midwest is eroding at a rapid pace. The fast growth of corn requires copious quantities of fertilizer in addition to insecticide. Chemical fertilizers seep into the streams and rivers and have caused an immense zone deplete of Oxygen in the Gulf of Mexico. Industrial farming methods have also increased our dependence on fossil fuels. By some estimates, one calorie of corn requires on average ten calories of fossil fuel before it reaches the consumer.
Michael Pollan discusses how we raise meat in this country. Take the millions of steaks served all across the country every day. The cattle slaughtered were mostly raised on a CAFO(Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation) on a diet that evolution ill suited them to eat. A diet consisting largely of Corn. The Angus cattle spend most of their lives on lots devoid of grass or vegetation and full of eye irritating dust. They spend their lives ankle deep in their excrement and require antibiotics and anti parasitic drugs to survive until slaughter. They suffer from acidosis of the rumen, an organ evolved to break down the cellulose in grass. The E-Coli that sicken so many Americans every year are of a strain that adapted to survive in the now more acid rumen and which now can survive our acidic stomachs to make us sick.
Michael Pollan contrasts this form of agriculture to a farm in Virginia that raises chickens(broilers and eggs), and Cattle on only grass. The cattle feed on luscious grass kept that way by rotating the cattle from one area of the pasture to another to avoid overgrazing. The chickens feed on the grass and insects attracted to the farm life. The grass benefits by the natural fertilizer these animals provide. The farm is as productive per acre as an Industrial farm...

YOU: The Owner's Manual, Updated and Expanded Edition: An Insider's Guide to ...
by Mehmet Oz, Michael F. Roizen
Amazon Price: $16.17
Customer Review: I am really impressed with this book. I've been looking to start making positive changes in my lifestyle to ensure that as I age I can delay health problems that come with it as long as possible. I never like hearing what I should be doing and instead want to understand and believe in something before making significant changes in my life.
What this book managed to achieve is to lay out relatively dry and droll information in a way to make it interesting, minimally corny, and easy to understand and relate to. That is no easy.
You want to know how much I like this book? It is a pretty large, relatively heavy volume, and I tossed my mystery novels out of the bag and took it with me on a long flight business trip. It's interesting enough that I wanted to read it first. I am about 2/3 through now, but I still have 2 days of trip and a long flight left.
Now, if I could just figure out how to convince my husband to read it. I guess I'll have to continue "informing" him of what I've learned.

The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child (Sears Parenting L...
by Robert Sears
Amazon Price: $8.39
Customer Review: I have several families in my pediatric practice who have altered the schedule of their children's vaccinations. A couple of them read this book and asked me to review it. Overall, I think it's well written, and there is plenty of information I learned from Dr. Sears. I do think that the most salient detail of the book is regarding aluminum, and it unintentionally casts a light of skepticism on aluminum. Perhaps ten years down the road, we will determine that subcutaneous or intramuscular exposure to aluminum is harmless. But in the process of finding out, many families will likely suffer from preventable illness. I don't think Dr. Sears wanted this to be an outcome of the book, but I have witnessed some families making risky decisions based on their readings. I'm happy to report that my practice is on track to take the very measures he recommends, because it is important to reduce ANY exposures we artificially create for our children. It's hard for any vaccine book marketed to families to keep from creating a culture of fear and distrust of doctors. However, as a pediatrician, I've found that the most reliable source of information to be the American Academy of Pediatrics. I am, of course, professionally biased. But isn't that the point. I would recommend the book to interested physicians, but I would recommend parents to read literature endorsed by the AAP first.
