Customer Review: Ann Louise Gittleman is one of nutrition's superstars. It is impossible to read anything she writes and not learn something that will cause you to change your eating habits for the better. Because of one of her books, I added zinc supplements to my vegetarian diet and immediately felt more energetic. Her new book, The Gut Flush Plan, is no exception to her library of important and useful books.

This book provides a 21-Day Gut Flush Plan, with daily menus, easy recipes, nutritional information, and shopping lists. The program is designed to detoxify your body; fortify your digestive system against pathogens; flush your digestive system of toxins, pathogens, and parasites; and feed you nourishing GI-building foods. The book emphasizes building healthy intestinal flora that may have been damaged by antibiotics, steroids, other medications, dietary habits, or illnesses. It also teaches you why yeast is an issue, gluten should be avoided, dairy (except yogurt and kefir) should be avoided, colon cleansing is helpful, probiotics are important, and fully digesting food is important. The book also reinforces and explains how gluten, fructose, and lactose (milk sugar) increase the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast in the gut. Another reminder for me is that ninety percent of food allergies and sensitivities come from the most common reaction-producing foods: wheat, milk, corn, unfermented soy, and peanuts.

Customer Review: Let me say from the outset that if I were evaluating just the book then I may have been inclined to give it a much better rating. Unfortunately the book is touted to be based upon the hit TV series of the same name which I find to be shockingly irresponsible in its design and message. I understand that in order for a TV series to be successful it has to generate high ratings but to promote fitness programs that risk permanent damage to the participants and implicitly suggest that this is the best route to rapid and permanent weight loss is absolutely unacceptable from where I stand as a physician. When I see massively obese people being coerced to jog at full gallop; jump on trampolines with already injured limbs: punch heavy bags that a pro-boxer would find challenging, I have to raise some serious objections to the message being conveyed.

In our book Dump Your Trainer one of the most important points we stress for those starting out on a weight loss program is to start off slow and avoid injuries. We caution that the injuries you sustain in an effort to lose weight too quickly can rapidly derail a weight loss program and can lead to long term damage that can come back to haunt you.

Sure, anyone can lose weight in a concentration camp environment; but to lose weight, and keep it off in a normal life setting is an entirely different situation. Having personally lost almost 60 pounds in less than six months and kept it off for over nine years, I can attest to the fact that you need to integrate a good diet and exercise program into your everyday lives and begin with a safe and effective program. I implore people to ignore the "boot camp" type approach to weight loss and instead incorporate a realistic program that does not risk permanent injury to the joints, tendons, spine and heart.

That said, I do believe that this book has some very useful information, which I might add, is quite different from the message conveyed in the show. I especially like their emphasis on a combination cardio and circuit training.

Customer Review: I picked this book up for a friend, but after skimming through it, realized that I wanted to keep it for myself, a 55 year old cancer survivor. The writing is very engaging - I kept wanting to learn more! Many of the health principles are applicable for anyone. Who doesn't want her body to be in balance and healthier? This book just makes so much sense. It is written so clearly and is so fascinating that I'd recommend it to women of any age.

I started the diet on 4/5/08 after spending a week reading the book fully. In December of last year I was taking 110 units of insulin a day. While my doctor was happy with my control (A1c 6.4) and management of the disease, I was not. I felt too heavy and I felt I was getting progressively weaker. My heart was not doing well and I had frequent and painful angina. I was taking a lot of heart medicine (Norvasc, Benicar & hydrochlorothiazide).

I have severe neuropathy in both feet, including a wound in my left foot that will not heal and a diabetic foot disease called "Charcots Arthropathy". I suffered a "focal neuropathy" that paralyzed my right side for 3 months and has left my right leg weak. My walking is very restricted. Diabetes has also taken my left eye. I suffered several hemorrhages, due to retinopathy, and now I am blind in my left eye.
I only bring these symptoms up to show that my diabetes was advanced and acute. I was forced to retire and go on disability at age 49.

I found the recipes easy to prepare and delicious. The closer you follow the diet the better your results will be. Remember, this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. It only works if you stick with it for the long term. If you return to the same diet that brought about your diabetes in the first place the diabetes will come back.

A word of caution on this point, your blood sugar level may come down very fast. I took my regular dose of insulin on day 1 and by 10:00 pm I was at 57 and beginning to feel the effects of low blood sugar. Test your blood often and have your doctor reduce your insulin dose before you start.

I stopped taking insulin altogether on day 15. I have not taken an injection of insulin in the past 25 days. My blood sugar level has stayed in the normal range. My doctor was amazed at the results. He tells me that he is telling all of the other doctors that one of his patients was able to cure his acute type 2 diabetes. He took down the information about the book and he says he is going to buy and read it and recommend it to his other diabetic patients.

I have lost a total of 24 pounds in the last 40 days. My blood sugar is normal without insulin and I have never felt healthier.

Customer Review: I am a 24 year old former collegiate golfer, and this book is probably one of the best I have read for golf specific training. The exercises are described well and the workouts are easy to follow. There is also a nutrition section which talks about how to be healthier day to day as well as what to eat pre / during a round. For anyone looking to increase flexibility, strength, power, eat better, prevent injury, this book is a must.

Just a side note, but the movement prep sequence for the workouts / pre round are worth the price of this book itself. I will never workout or play golf again without completing the Movement Prep beforehand, it is the best stretching / warm up routine I have seen.

I highly recommend this book.

Customer Review: I give five stars to this book for a few reasons. First, being a young adult involved in the fashion industry, it is not easy to find answers out there that make sense. Of all the literature I have read on nutrition, dieting, and weight control, I feel this one is well rounded. There are no severe restrictions, no two week diet plans, and no extreme measures with results that do not last. I would feel comfortable recommending this to a younger crowd- teenaged group, or to an older more experienced crowd.

Pressure from outside sources are enough stress- we do not need to add the additional pressure form oursleves. One of the most important facts about this book was that it showed me what is right for myself may not be right for other people, and that is okay. Being true to yourself is one of the best ways to feel better, regardless of judgement and criticism.

After years of struggling with body image and disordered eating, I am starting to feel better. I have been practicing intuitive eating for 4 months now, and through the stress of graduating college, I feel pretty good! I realize that eating, as in what you eat, how you feel (or don't) when you eat, and how you eat, all reflect a deeper look into yourself. In this healing process, I finally realize it is no longer about losing weight. The point is to feel better, happier, and have more esteem for yourself and your body. I can say that I enjoy ice cream to the max now! By removing the deprivation and guilt, we release the need to stuff our faces (and our emotions). Thank you.
