How Not to Look Old: Fast and Effortless Ways to Look 10 Years Younger, 10 Po...
by Charla Krupp
Amazon Price: $17.15
Customer Review: This book, "How Not To Look Old", has BEAUTIFUL shiny paper, and an inviting template style, reminiscent of "InSTYLE" magazine, for which the author, CARLA KRUPP, once worked. Also included are many pictures of popular movie stars, music stars, and models of today. (All females, for some reason). It's interesting to look at these "star" pictures. Yes, they look "glamourous"...but not "elegant". I suppose it depends on the "look" one wants, I guess. I've always been one who favours elegance, and thus, this book, for all its many truly helpful hints, is not the "fashion bible" I expected it to be. Then again, I'm really not one who likes "fashion" -- which is effemeral and changeable. I'm more one for "style". Classic style. As explified by Jacqueline Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth II, and, more recently, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.
On page 111, for instance, the reader is advised to wear long, bell-bottomed black pants, a tan, open tweed jacket, white blouse, and many chains of long, obviously fake gold, and carry a semi-hobo style black bag, rather than wear the same jacket, with a matching skirt, string of pearls, with the traditional upper-class acoutrement of a small lapdog in hand. The caption, (referring to the matching jacket and skirt), reads:
'TOO OLD - matchy matchy'. However, it is interesting to note -- in this comparison picture, as in others throughout the book, that the "Just Right" lady seems to have have lightened her hair, had her teeth whitened, has lost her tan, has a far more natural-looking smile, and is given a more flattering, three-quarter stance, than that of the other picture, where the same woman looks at you dead on. I tried picturing a switch inn clothes for each picture and stance. The result? The lady on the right looks elegant, the one of the left, very tired looking, as if she had partied far too much. "Matchy-matchy" is NOT necessarily a ageing way to dress. It is often an ELEGANT way to dress!
Mentioning, (on page 170) that "Nothing Ages You Like....Ugly Orthopedic Shoes" is truly a disservice to those who must wear them! (How about mentioning that a sunny smile can over-come this?)
At the end of every chapter, is a section called "Brilliant Buys", mentioning recommended producrs in the category spoken of in that chapter. One is left wondering whether the producers of these recommended products helped fund the production of this book!

Staging Your Comeback: A Complete Beauty Revival for Women Over 45
by Christopher Hopkins
Amazon Price: $15.61
Customer Review: Being a woman with long hair, the first thing I wanted to know was Christopher's opinion on the subject. My hair looks wavy and smooth when it is long, but the shorter it gets the wilder it gets. Some of it is curly, some straighter, and its overall curliness changes depending on the weather, how much it has been brushed, the moon phase, etc. - you get the idea... so maybe when I'm 90 I'll feel I just have to have it shorter (unless I still look 30 - unlikely). What I learned from Christopher is that some women can get away with longer hair provided it's not thin, straggly, or gray, and their face does not look old. In fact, he says and shows, "long hair on an older face looks insecure, not confident, and not sexy." But if your face looks young and your hair is full, healthy, and young-looking, he won't twist your arm to cut it - am I representing you accurately on the subject?
Anyway, the book is not just about hair - it is a complete holistic approach to looking and feeling fabulous. The book is full of valuable insights that you can learn and apply to your hair, makeup, and clothing such as "the five fundamentals are line, proportion, color, texture, and accent," and "Looking beautiful is an art, particularly as you age." Christopher does not try to force you to conform to just one look - you don't need to worry about a one-size-fits-all approach. The book's advice is tailored to the look that best suits your Image Profile - classic, casual, romantic, dramatic, alluring, or innovative. The book will tell you how to choose the best clothes for you, how to select and apply makeup that will make you look best, and of course, how to do your hair.
What makes the book even more special is that woven through its practical advice is an underlying theme of self-discovery and personal growth, which comes from a combination of enhancing the inside as well as the outside.
Christopher, congratulations on the wonderfully successful career you are having! You are making women feel good about themselves - it is a wonderful gift you give, inspiring women to "stage a comeback" and giving them the tools they need to make it happen. A great book - highly recommended! Debra Lawrence, author of THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams. P. S. Are they talking behind my back about the hair?

Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, 7th Edition
by Paula Begoun, Bryan Barron
Amazon Price: $19.47
Customer Review: Book offers comprehensive guidance about various cosmetic products, though it is missing a few manufacturers. Very helpful advice to narrow down the search for cosmetics that are worth the money.
Makeup Makeovers: Expert Secrets for Stunning Transformations
by Robert Jones
Amazon Price: $14.71
Customer Review: This book is fantastic. I was going to set up an appointment with a make-up artist for a lesson, but came upon this book first. I'm glad I did! The difference in my appearance after using his advice is amazing. And I'm not talented with the whole hair/skin/makeup thing. Some have commented that there aren't step by step instructions. True, but there are plenty of diagrams and descriptions. I didn't feel a need for more explicit step by step instruction. And while it may seem like you are putting on a lot of makeup, it doesn't feel or look like it when you are finished. Together with advice and makeup from Lauren Hutton's line (laurenhutton.com) I feel much more confident in my makeup application. I'm 47, and Lauren's make-up is great for those of us over 40. I also highly recommend L'Oreal's Age Perfect Make-up, especially if you have dry skin like me.

The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy: Over 600 Natural, Non-T...
by Valerie Ann Worwood
Amazon Price: $13.57
Customer Review: I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said by other reviewers, so I'll keep it short. I have a lot of different books on aromatherapy, a hobby/lifestyle of mine.
If you're looking for your "first book" on it, get this one - it's comprehensive, safe, and informative. I've been using it regularly for years.
Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin, and Hair from the Beauty Authority
by Melissa Schweiger
Amazon Price: $18.45
Customer Review: I was excited when I saw this book in my Sephora catalog. As a makeup junkie, I have always been a fan of Sephora and drove three hours to the nearest store until one went in a mall near me a couple of years ago.
It is true, the book is much like a much-expanded version of the store's catalog. The tips there are sound, there just isn't any information in the book that will be new to someone who is not a complete beginner to the world of makeup.
On a positive note, I was glad to see model Maggie Rizer on the book's cover.
Bottom line: if I had the opportunity to look at the book before I bought it, I would not have bought it. As it is, I expect it will languish in my bookcase. If I had a friend or young relative who was new to the world of makeup, I would be glad to pass it on to her.
The Little Black Book of Style
by Nina Garcia
Amazon Price: $13.37
Customer Review: I liked this book! It's definitely not rocket-science! LOL! Seriously, I think it will give the reader some basic knowledge about developing thier own style. I must say that most of us who are not in the fashion business do not normally have a tailor on call, nor are we "international jetsetters!", such as Ms. Garcia.....who continually pounds us over the head w/her wordliness. I digress....the book is very intertaining and I don't think you'll regret buying it!
The 5-Minute Face: The Quick & Easy Makeup Guide for Every Woman
by Carmindy
Amazon Price: $14.93
Customer Review: The 5-minute face delivers exactly what it has promised - it's a "quick and easy makeup guide". Nothing fancy, nothing complicated. True enough, I did learn how to create a (nearly!) flawless face in 5 minutes, which helped me heaps in the few precious minutes before leaving for work. There are a number of beautiful photos too. However, I distinctly remember wondering why they used a flawless woman (who had brown eyeliner on) in the 5-minute routine photos. I couldn't spot the difference before and after the application of foundation.
This is not the book for makeup artists or fanatics. This book will just bore you. But if you want to know the fundamentals of makeup (and become a makeup artist or fanatic later on) - this would be the best book to buy.
