The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin Person by Judith S. Beck Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: This book uses cognitive psychology to help you lose weight. Cognitive psychology is based on the concept that the way you think affects how you feel and what you do. Cognitive therapy, then, helps you identify your self-defeating thinking and helps you respond to it so you can feel better and behave in helpful ways. Instead of leading you step-by-step through a diet plan, this book addresses the psychology behind why you can't get yourself to follow one and lose weight. In this book, you pick the diet (and an alternative as a back up), and the book helps you follow it.
The set-up of the book is a six-week plan. Week 1 is laying the groundwork, where you pick 2 diets. Week 2 is getting prepared to diet, Week 3 is starting the diet, Week 4 looks into responding to sabotaging thoughts, Week 5 is about overcoming challenges, such as staying in control when you go out to eat, and Week 6 is fine tuning things.
All-in-all, I'd have to say that its a great resource to address the psycholgical side of eating. There's no magic to it, just a little looking inside yourself and addressing any barriers you have that may be holding you back.
Beck Diet Solution Weight Loss Workbook: The 6-week Plan to Train Your Brain ... by Judith S. Beck Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: Despite my extensive collection of diet books, there are really only two that have helped me: Dr. Phil's "The Ultimate Weight Solution", and now, this book. I just finished the 6 weeks, faithfully following the program each day, and I must say that I do notice a big change in my attitude toward food and exercise. I plan to take a week "off", then start reviewing it for another 6 weeks. There are lots of great strategies here, and the daily reinforcement keeps me focused. I highly recommend this book for its down-to-earth, no nonsense approach. (If you like to check off lists and write things down, I would recommend the Workbook over the book).
The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People with Alzheimer Disease, ... by Nancy L. Mace, Peter V. Rabins Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: I was looking for a resource to learn more about dementia and Alzheimers. This was a wonderful book for anyone who is needing more information about the disease and I loaned it to a friend who is experiencing many of the same things - highly recommended if your loved one has or believes they have AD.
The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat: And Other Clinical Tales by Oliver Sacks Amazon Price: $10.20
Customer Review: This book was assigned text for a neuropsych. class I had during my undergraduate degree. It was by far the best text I've had assigned in any class. This book, along with Ramachandran's, Phantom's in the Brain, was the first time I even considered the Nature side of the Nature/Nurture debate. I will never forget the stories. Learning about these cases with brain disorders left me with such a sense of awe for what the brain can do. Sacks has a wonderful writing style that turns philosophical at the end of each story, so you are left with a lot of food for thought. It is also a great exercise to follow his choices at each step and weight it against what you may have done.
If any book can be frustrating and enlightening at the same time it is "The Mars & Venus Diet and Exercise Solution." This book is filled to the brim with interesting information on dopamine, serotonin, testosterone and endorphins. You will learn about the top forty serotonin-producing foods and how to get endorphins to release into your body. There is also a good amount of information on how to make your relationships work. There seems to be a biological basis for everything John Gray has been teaching for years. He explains why women are obsessed with giving too much and how to get men to give more. It is logical and makes complete sense. He also gives some of the real reasons marriages fail. I thought some of the information was very interesting, especially about why men may become workaholics:
"By increasing mental stress by taking on too much work (deadlines and long hours), men in particular stimulate the production of endorphins to reduce mental distress and anxieties temporarily." ~ pg. 103
While this is very helpful and intellectually exciting, I think the actual diet can be confusing. In the section on following the Mars & Venus diet I came across many frustrating things. Each morning you are supposed to drink a glass of water enriched with lemon juice, honey, trace minerals and aloe vera juice. This drink is also taken after you exercise in the morning. That means you are taking minerals twice. The problem I see with this is that you are also taking trace minerals with your morning health shake. (This drink is also recommended for fasting - should you take that many minerals in a day?)
My main question really is: "Is it necessary to take so many trace minerals?" The morning shake is made with a number of ingredients that can also be found in the Mars & Venus Superfoods Shake. In fact, you can skip mixing up the shake from scratch and just purchase the shake online. My problem with the shake is that it contains blanched almond meal and I'm allergic to nuts in general.
I looked up the Isagenix products and read the lists of ingredients. There are three products you could buy even though John Gray also says you can find other brands (he doesn't mention which ones so I'll give you that information).
The products you can buy (at the Isagenix website) include the Mars & Venus Superfoods ...
I really wanted to like this book. The authors seem like nice, dedicated people. But I found little of use in the book, except for the last few chapters. I've noticed that I have this problem with ADD books written by people with ADD: but where Dr. Hallowell's book is also piecemeal and all over the place, he gives you important information, and things you can use.
There was a little of that in this book, but I feel the authors spend way too much time urging the reader that it's OK to have ADD, and it doesn't make them Lazy, Stupid, or Crazy. I knew that going in: I want to learn about effective strategies and skills to deal with ADD's challenges. Like some other ADD books, there's a ton of buildup and anecdote, leaving me wanting more.
This book could be 30 % shorter, and still provide the helpful information that it provides. A little too breezy a style for this ADD reader who needs it in digestible chunks.
The MS Recovery Diet by Ann Sawyer, Judith Bachrach Amazon Price: $11.53
Customer Review: I feel extremely lucky to have found this book. When I was diagnosed with MS in October 2007, I instinctively became very careful with my diet because of past health problems due to food (Celiac's,food allergies & sensitivies).
But there were things I didn't know in regards to food & MS. This book explains why diet is important & how different foods effect MS. I also enjoyed reading all the personal case histories of real MS patients who have tried this diet.
I plan on staying on this diet the rest of my life. (I want to do everything possible for me to achieve the best possible outcome, so I also take one of the MS drugs (Avonex) in addition to this diet.)
Also, this book explained more to me about the disease of MS than all the neurologist's I have seen put together. I am deeply grateful to Ann Sawyer & Judith Bachrach for writing this book...Thank You!
