If you already have a copy of The South Beach Diet, you need to buy this one as well so you can do the exercises.

I'm a big fan of The South Beach Diet. It helped me lose a lot of weight when nothing else worked. I felt comfortable losing the weight and looked great when I was done, rather than like a survivor of starvation. Whenever I gained a bit of weight since then, returning to Phase 1 quickly took it off.

But there was a problem: I clearly wasn't exercising enough. In the past, I've done a lot of walking and weight lifting . . . but I didn't get much benefit in terms of medical measures like reduced triglycerides. In fact, eating oatmeal and taking omega-3 supplements does more for my cholesterol level than exercise. I know that I need something different.

My eyes opened wide when I got to the section of this book that talked about how moderate amounts of walking (20 minutes every other day) with short intervals of fast movement spaced between moderate walking would do me more good for burning fat than doing all that walking that I used to do at one speed. Now, that sounded great!

Between walking days, you do some moderate body toning. Here is where I had some concerns about the book: The photographs show a lot of stress being put on the back. That's not a good idea for me: I have back problems. I'm not quite sure what to do, but I've ordered the DVD to see how these exercises are to be done and hope there will be detailed instructions there for people with bad backs.

In this book, Dr. Agatston does a good job of describing the various physical ills in joints and feet that baby boomers develop from the wrong kinds of activity and exercise. He even helped me understand how I create vast shoulder pain when I shovel snow the wrong way . . . and now I know what not to do.

If you are under 30, you can probably use this book just as is. If you are older, be careful with the body toning!

I've been looking to start making positive changes in my lifestyle to ensure that as I age I can delay health problems that come with it as long as possible. I never like hearing what I should be doing and instead want to understand and believe in something before making significant changes in my life.

What this book managed to achieve is to lay out relatively dry and droll information in a way to make it interesting, minimally corny, and easy to understand and relate to. That is no easy.

You want to know how much I like this book? It is a pretty large, relatively heavy volume, and I tossed my mystery novels out of the bag and took it with me on a long flight business trip. It's interesting enough that I wanted to read it first. I am about 2/3 through now, but I still have 2 days of trip and a long flight left.

Now, if I could just figure out how to convince my husband to read it. I guess I'll have to continue "informing" him of what I've learned.

Customer Review: I have only a few days left on this 30 day program and without following the food list exactly I have lost over 12 pounds. Stick to the exercise program (which will challenge you), use the daily food list as a "guide" (can be expensive to buy and cook everything listed, however there are some great recipes) and this book will do wonders for you. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Compare the information in this to all the other books that are out there and this will come out on top everytime. Still, just buying the book isn't enough, you still have to get out there and do the work. And yes, alot of the exercises are using gym equipment, however these can be modified quite easily to be done at home. No treadmill for sprints? Jump rope for 3 minutes instead. People saying "I don't have access to a gym so it's no good" are just making excuses. IF you really want results, this book will get you there.

Customer Review: The plan in the book is intense and I would think the plan would would be hard for someone who is new to nutrition/fitness. It's more of a cold turkey kind of plan than a gradual one in which you change small things about your lifestyle day by day to reach your goals. This is about drastically changing your diet and encorporating both cardio and weight training. For some people that can be a lot to grasp. For others, it is the perfect solution and they can put all their focus into it and succeed.

What she writes in the book is true: If you eat clean and do cardio and strength train you will absolutely lose weight and keep it off. You will benefit from doing exactly what the book says to do. However, it requires huge lifestyle changes. It's hard core. Hard core changes for hard core results! But sometimes that doesn't work for everyone because it requires so much change at once.

The advice in the book is good but is not practical for everyone. Take what you want from it and use it towards your own fitness and diet plan. It's good to educate yourself and choose what is best for you.

For me personally, I cut a lot of the recommended portion sizes down to something that is better for me. I find some of the daily meal plans to be really healthy but they are higher in calories than I really want to be eating. Tosca Rena weight trains and if you are not weight training then you may not need all the calories she recommends eating. I agree with eating every few hours to keep your metabolism high and to not feel so hungry, because this will keep you from screwing up. I also agree with preparing your foods ahead of time and even carrying them around with you in a cooler if you are constantly around foods that are going to screw up your goals. It's important to be prepared. This book does a great job of breaking down what to buy at the grocery store, how to store your foods, and other behaviors that will help with clean eating.

I think this is a great book with a lot of useful, helpful information in regard to diet and fitness. The language in the book is easy to read and is sometimes humorous, which is nice. It's easy to follow along and it's a quick read.
