The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret
by Brenda Watson
Amazon Price: $7.99
Customer Review: I am new to the whole organic/herbal thing. This book is the right information for me at the right time. I began this "diet" before receiving the book (I read the first 3 chapters in the book store) and am completely satisfied! I feel better and am losing weight. She shares her knowledge in a way that someone as new to all of this as me can understand.
The F-Factor Diet: Discover the Secret to Permanent Weight Loss
by Tanya Zuckerbrot
Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: I have read through this book and think there are good points and bad points. First of all, the bad. I think that this book is highly misleading. She states a lot of times in the beginning that it is not a low carb diet and she will not be taking away your carbs, but in the first stage, she takes away almost 100% of your carbs, leaving you with only high fiber cereal, very specific crackers that are very high fiber w/o carbs and a single piece of fruit. In addition, she does not let you have yogurt or milk the first phase. Like all the other low carb diets, you are allowed as much meat and veggies as you want. Additionally, if you remain on this diet the rest of your life, you are forever counting and limiting your carbs to a total of 75 a day. Granted that is a lot more than some low carb diets, but still, a limit nonetheless.
Also I was very disappointed in her fiber suggestions. You'd think that since this book is about fiber, she would tell you all about how to get it in your diet. She does not. She dedicates a few pages in the beginning with a limited list of the fibers in various foods. In the recipe section, you would expect her to have loads of recipes with extremely high fiber counts. There are not. Most of the recipes have only 5 g of fiber or less per serving. There are lots of other cookbooks out there about healthy eating that have a lot more fiber in them than she gives you. Finally, the only way you actually get fiber on her diet is to eat high fiber cereal. She says she wants you eating 30-35 g of fiber a day. She starts off saying most people get 9-11 g a day. Here's her breakdown. At some point in the day, have a serving of the high fiber cereal: 13 g of fiber. Have up to 8 of her high fiber crackers that have 3 g in each cracker. Let's say you are moderate and have 4 crackers a day: 12 g of fiber. That totals 25 g of fiber. Minus that from the higher number you are supposed to have each day (35 g) and you are left w/ 10 g of fiber to get from your diet, which is exactly what you were getting before starting this "diet". She could have summed up the book in a few sentences: Eat high fiber cereal for breakfast and 2 or 3x a day have a high fiber cracker or 2 and you'll get the fiber you need. She really never goes into detail on how to get more fiber through whole foods in your diet.
The one good thing about this book is the recipes. They look fantastic! There are a lot of veggies in ...

Amazon Price: $10.88
Customer Review: This book is great! It explains in laymans terms the whys and hows of the diet. The only negative is the food chart in the back is outdated. I would love to see it updated. Beyond that, the diet itself works and the book explains the simple changes to make in your life to adapt to a healthier, fiber filled life style.

Customer Review: Some of the diet and diabetes books I've been getting lately are pretty bland and boring with just a few recipes in each category. This book has many options to help us eat healthfully at home, while satisfying some of our eating out cravings. Last night I made the Chicken Vindaloo and Curried Eggplant and Lentils because my husband has been craving Indian food. Tonight I'm making the Thai Basil Chicken. Over 3 dozen soups! I love how it has a Recipe Index in addition to a regular index, and menu suggestions for creating complete meals. Finally a diabetes cookbook that I'm going back to over and over again.
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because they need to put out an updated version. This was printed in 1993. I bought it used for less than $7 w/shipping. But with Whole Foods and Trader Joe's making whole grain products more available to the average shopper, it would be nice to see whole wheat and other whole grain flours incorporated in the recipes, rather than white flour. And, for example, hulled barley recommended over pearled in a soup recipe (that has plenty of simmer time anyway (to allow for the longer cooking time of the whole grain product)).
Also, in the next edition, they need to standardize their measurements. For example, in one recipe the chicken breast quantity was described as "2 whole skinless and boneless chicken breasts 1/2 pound each, halved" and in another as "1 pound skinless and boneless chicken breasts" - both recipes make 4 servings with the same protein grams in the nutritional info, so I assume both recipes call for 1 pound chicken breasts, but that could be made clearer.
However, for expanding your options beyond the quick, easy, boring or bland, I highly recommend the Joslin Diabetes Gourmet Cookbook
Easy Breadmaking for Special Diets : Wheat-Free, Milk- And Lactose-Free, Egg-...
by Nicolette M. Dumke

Customer Review: I was very disappointed in this book. The "Sugar-free" claim is a complete misnomer, because this book uses fructose sugar (apple juice) in almost every recipe, claiming these are "sugar-free" just because they don't use cane-derived sugar (sucrose).
Also, if you are like me looking for recipes that are simultaneously gluten-free, lactose-free, high fiber, low fat, and sugar-free, prepare to be disappointed. This book's recipes do not address difficult special diets that have multiple restrictions. Each recipe only addresses one or two restrictions. The book doesn't seem to cater to many real conditions that require multiple restrictions.

Customer Review: For those looking for a more healthy approach to food, this book paves the way. It is filled with fact and documented support. Many hours of research and planning went into compiling the pleathra of recipes. With these one can feel assured that they are on the way to a reduced but tastie low-fat diet.
My husband was diagnosed with hyperlipidemia and I went looking for recipes designed as fat-free or reduced fat. This book affords me the opportunity of cooking delicious and healthy food for him. It also gave me valuable information on how to de-fat other recipes and be able to decifer the meriad of labels now bombarding our grocery shelves.
It should be on the shelf and used by every serious cook around.
The Reality Diet
by Steven Schnur
Amazon Price: $4.99
Customer Review: My doctor told me about this book. If you are looking for a diet that is fun and easy, try this one. The first part of the book is an eye opener as the author talks about the failure of fad diets and the merits of good nutrition. Want to loose weight, feel great and be full on fewer calories? Learn the 2/90 rule! Two grams of dietary fiber per 90 calories a serving. You will be amazed how when eating well, you will be able to pass up on the temptations of fast food. This book is written by a cardiologist.
