Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism
by Jenny McCarthy
Amazon Price: $16.29
Customer Review: I found this book extremely insightful for all special needs parents, not just parents of children with autism. The stories about hospitalizations, meds, searching for information are universal. My son doesn't have autism, he has a very rare disorder, but I was touched by this book. The bad language didn't offend me like it did others--it's Jenny McCarthy, I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. I thought it actually lent some authenticity, same Jenny, fighting the battles we all fight. Keep on fighting for your child and ours, Jenny!

The Kid-Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook: The Ultimate Guide to the Gluten-F...
by Pamela Compart, Dana Laake
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: I bought the cookbook because I have a child with ADHD and other issues. The chicken nuggets are quite tasty. I've also tried the frutie smoothie. It addresses issues of the five sense with food, which is terrific because if you have a child with these issues, there are many suggestions on how to get around them. I am trying the diet for my son and we'll see how it goes. There is a fair amount of recipes, but I think that the recipe section could have been more expansive and less "information" in the front of the book. There is at least 50 pages of why you should do this diet which I'm not sure was necessary. This is why I gave four stars instead of 5. The recipes I have tried are good.

Gluten-Free Quick & Easy: From Prep to Plate Without the Fuss - 200+ Recipes ...
by Carol Fenster
Amazon Price: $12.89
Customer Review: This cookbook is the best gluten-free cookbook I've tried. My family loves the recipes, and the author really understands "real world" cooking, practical, quick and easy, both adult and kid-friendly, with excellent time-saving tips.

Living Gluten-Free For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness))
by Danna Korn
Amazon Price: $13.59
Customer Review: With more health professionals recognizing celiac disease for the problem it is, this book was really helpful, in an easy format, in understanding what would help sufferers of celiac disease and what are possible substitutes, using gluten-free foods. Thankfully, more local grocery stores are supplying gluten-free, wheat-free foods so it's not terribly difficult to find relief!

This book is easy to follow, it provides excellent tips and guidance to see if you have intolerance or sensitivity to gluten, and provides excellent information on where to find gluten free products. It also provides receipes that are easy to do! It is a valuable source of information.

Gluten-Free Girl: How I Found the Food That Loves Me Back...And How You Can Too
by Shauna James Ahern
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: I am gluten-intolerant and am always looking for good recipes and tips for filling in those areas of my diet that are necessarily devoid of wheat products. This book seemed like a good bet.

Wrong. I know the author means it to be an inspirational type book to get people to learn to love whole foods and all that, and that the stuff about her dysfunctional eating habits as a kid and into adulthood is supposed to illustrate the degree of change she has made. But she also makes sweeping statements that are just not true, like when she says over and over that an entire generation was raised on totally processed food. That may be true of her upbringing but that doesn't mean that it is what everyone did. She seems self-involved to the point that she is unable to comprehend that there are realities besides hers.

There's also a lot of text taken directly from her blog. I don't get why a publisher would allow this without calling it an anthology. It's annoying to be reading along and then realize hey, I've already read this. The cost of the book should be prorated based on how much material is new!

I also wasn't very impressed with the quality of the writing for someone who says she has always wanted to be a writer and who teaches writing. She seems to think that the more unusual the description, the better. Sometimes when she is describing a food dish, she actually ends up making it sound like something less than delicious, due to using a weird simile that I suspect she thinks is very creative.

On the plus side...it is inspiring in spots. It made me want to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables.

Maybe I would have liked it more if I were a foodie. I love to cook and eat but food is only one of many passions in my life. I can't imagine food being the focus of my entire life.

The Gluten-Free Gourmet Bakes Bread: More Than 200 Wheat-Free Recipes
by Bette Hagman
Amazon Price: $12.92
Customer Review: This book is awesome and thorough for the gluten intolerant or celiac. It's not going to make you a great baker overnight, but at least there's hope. Packaged bread mixes are okay and pre-made bread is awful so accept the challenge and enhance your life. This woman did a lot of work for us and this is the only way to have decent baked goods. She's the best.

Gluten-Free Baking Classics
by Annalise G. Roberts
Amazon Price: $11.86
Customer Review: It isn't often I feel passionately enough about a book or product to actually pen a review, but as the mother of a one-year-old with anaphylaxis-level allergies to wheat, I could kiss this author for "saving" my son's birthday party! My baby's wheat sensitivity is exactly the type parents dread, so severe it landed us in the ER the first time he was exposed to wheat, with such virulence his pediatrician banned wheat from MY diet as long as our son nurses. Overnight, our household became a wheat-barren landscape: our child never knowing animal crackers or teething biscuits, all of us happily substituting rice pasta into homemade mac-and cheese, my husband sneaking Subway at lunch.

A month ago, though, we began planning the ubiquitous overdone first birthday celebration. We had some degree of faith we'd find a cookbook, but having tried market-ready wheat-free products ourselves, slogging through the dry, dense world of commercially-prepared baked goods and deciding we'd rather go without bread in the house than provide storage space for yet another crumbling compacted rice block, we had little faith in our final preparation. I did the requisite research, reluctantly settling on Ms. Roberts' Gluten-Free Baking Classics; the reviews looked good, the recipes at least had some variety, and if it was going to be bad, at least it was the best of the awful available in our newfound wheat-free world.

So imagine my surprise when my husband, fearing social ostracization in the face of a probable brick-cake debacle, coyly suggested he'd like some cupcakes when our cookbook arrived? The author's introductory chapters list very specific mixing and handling instructions for her basic flour (another plus for this book, it uses a singular flour mix for the majority of the recipes), and while I followed her mixing instructions, I did defy the author's admonition not to scoop right out of the container once our project was underway! Having no idea how this wheatless batter would react anyway, I halved the recipe and only partially filled the cupcake tins, expecting little rise or texture. After all, these suckers would clearly not be something we wanted excess of cluttering our counter or fridge space with a party coming up. But within half an hour, lo and behold! Beautiful, peaked, butter-colored mounds rising just above the rims? The scent of warm vanilla permeating the kitchen?? My husband sneaking in, peeking into the oven, drooling wi...
