The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Recipe Book: Protect Yourself and Your Family ...
by Jessica K. Black
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: The association between chronic inflammation and disease has been revealed and is continually supported by research studies. Naturopathic practitioner, Jessica Black, has identified foods to eat and foods to avoid that will keep us from unnecessarily over stimulating our immune systems and causing unhealthy, disease-provoking inflammatory responses.

The book begins by explaining why an anti-inflammatory diet is beneficial, providing scientific support. The book continues with what foods to eat and what foods to avoid, as well as 108 recipes. There is also a week of sample menus for summer months and one for winter months. The recipes use anti-inflammatory foods while excluding common allergens and inflammation-promoters.

An anti-inflammatory diet should emphasize pineapple, most fruits (though limiting citrus), vegetables, garlic, ginger, turmeric, flaxseed oil, nuts (not peanuts), seeds (sesame, pumpkin, sunflower), flaxseed oil, olive oil, and filtered water. Additional good food choices include: flaxseeds, avocados, fish (salmon, cod, haddock, halibut, mackerel, sardines, tuna, trout), whole grains (amaranth, spelt, barley, buckwheat, millet, oatmeal, quinoa, basmati, brown rice, rye), legumes, beans (black, pinto, navy, mung), split peas, curry, and tofu (or better choice fermented tempeh or miso.) Inflammation-promoters include wheat products, dairy products, corn, peanuts and peanut butter, sugar, fried foods, foods containing hydrogenated oils, processed foods, alcohol, juice, coffee, caffeinated teas and sodas, potatoes, tomatoes, pork, nonorganic eggs, shellfish, and citrus fruits (except lemon).

Dr. Black also has many healthy hints such as:
For cooking use Coconut oil rather that Canola oil, which is toxic.
Choose yams and sweet potatoes rather than potatoes and tomatoes.
Avoid wheat.
Choose fermented soy products such as tempeh and miso rather than tofu.
Avoid shellfish such as shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, and mussels.
Limit citrus except lemon.
Limit dried fruit
Use quinoa to thicken soup rather than oats.
Use split peas, barley, or navy beans rather than lentils.

This book is full of information in this important area of inflammation and disease. Highly recommended! A great companion book which has similar foods to emphasize and avoid and that is exceptional for weight loss is THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live...

The Fibromyalgia Cookbook: More Than 120 Easy and Delicious Recipes
by Shelley Ann Smith, Alison, M.D. Bested
Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 1996. Since that time, I had tried a variety of things to reduce the intensity of my symptoms and the number of flare ups that I experience. Then, about three years ago, I began noticing how food could either exasperate my health issues or make me feel better, particularly my moods and energy levels.

Over time, mostly through trial and error, I have created a nutritional plan that seems to support my needs, increase the number of good days I have, and is easy enough to follow without feeling like I'm on a diet. In some ways, it's like learning to cook again so I'm always on the look out for interesting recipes that I can adapt as needed. Generally, this tends to mean making two dinners, one for myself and another for my family.

Then, I came upon The Fibromyalgia Cookbook. I was pleasantly surprised. All the things that I had to learn the hard way (no red meat, no refined flour, no refined sugar, and plenty of fresh raw vegetables) were set out in black and white before me. What's more, the recipes were simple to make (even when I'm having a bad day) and tasty enough so that my family actually enjoyed quite a few of the meals and salads.

The Fibromyalgia Nutrition Guide: Contains Valuable Dietary Guidelines, Recip...
by Mary Moeller, Joe M. Elrod
Amazon Price: $10.36
Customer Review: I got this book and honestly found it a big disappointment. Most of the info in it is in other books and the recipes really arent any big deal. I knew most of the nutrition info already. If you already have a library of FM or nutrition info, this book is pointless.

The Fibromyalgia Solution: A Breakthrough Approach to Heal Your Body and Take...
by David Dryland, Lorie List
Amazon Price: $10.49
Customer Review: I had intended to write a lengthly review about this book, until I read the the full disclosure of the medications this doctor is using. I now feel it is more imperative to caution anyone who buys this book. First of all, this book is fluff. It does not accurately reflect fibromyalgia in the least. Fibromyalgia is a multi-system disorder with a myriad of co-existing medical conditions. It does not merely amplify already underlying medical conditions as this doctor firmly believes. My greatest concern is the use of not one, but two medications that were developed for Parkinson's patients, with restless leg syndrome. He uses "a regimen of Mirapex and Requip". Both of these medications carry side-effects that increase symptoms that are associated with Fibromyalgia. Especially fatigue, increase in infection, nausea and dizziness; and that's just to start out. Both can also cause a drop in blood pressure, headaches, chest pains, and many other dangerous complications. I cannot imagine the increased risk of combining these medications and nothing in the literature suggests the FDA ever approved them being used together. I cringe at the outcome of this combination as it could be fatal. So read the book with caution but I urge you to read more, there are a lot of useful resources out there and there are no quick fixes for Fibromyalgia. I strongly suggest you read the books by Dr. Devin Starlanyl, who actually has Fibromyalgia. This is an excellent starting point to understanding this disorder.

Customer Review: When I read this book, suggested by my ND, I no longer felt crazy and alone. All the things that you go through when you have Leaky Gut is overwhelming. To hear from someone who went through it and is on the other side is very encouraging! A must read for someone who has Leaky Gut Syndrome, Candida, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, or a myriad of symptoms.

Fibromyalgia and Muscle Pain: Your Self-Treatment Guide (Thorsons Health Series)
by Leon Chaitow
Amazon Price: $19.91
Customer Review: I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (meeting chronic fatigue syndrome criteria as well) several years ago, and I've read many books on the subject. This one is written for the intelligent lay person or healthcare practitioner; it's fairly easy to read and contains loads of useful information on diagnosing and treating fibromyalgia. I refer to it often for self-treatment and have ordered copies for several members of my healthcare team. The emphasis here is on treatments that have actually worked for patients, not on speculative causes and effects. Included are questionnaires on allergies, hyperventilation, candida, thyroid, food intolerances, anxiety, and low blood sugar, along with specific suggestions for treating these problems.

Of particular interest to me were the sections on breathing patterns and fibromyalgia. Dr. Chaitow discusses the chain reaction that takes place when you stop breathing deeply and regularly (because of pain, in most cases). Among other things, shallow and irregular breathing actually increase your perception of pain.

An excellent, fairly short reference volume for your fibromyalgia library (if you have fibromyalgia, you probably have one)... I recommend it highly.

Pain-Free with Magnet Therapy: Discover how Magnets can Help Relieve Arthriti...
by Lara Owen
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: Pain-free with Magnet Therapy is an excellent introduction to the field of magnet therapy. This book is a good starting point for anyone who wants to use magnets to treat a health condition: use it to sort out fact from fiction when it comes to assessing the claims of magnet manufacturers and salespeople. Lara Owen has done a great deal of research and in this book describes in plain English what science knows about magnets and what they can and cannot do. Yet Owen does not exclude the tantalizing possibilities that haven't yet been researched but are suggested by the stories of people who have tried magnets.

The book is also interesting because Owen explores the idea that as we come to understand magnet therapy better, we'll gain clues needed to understand other mysterious therapies: acupuncture, homeopathy, reflexology and similar medical systems that rely on energetic, rather than biochemical, intervention.

After reading this book, I can unreservedly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to work with magnets for pain relief and self-healing with knowledge and confidence.

Fibromyalgia: Simple Relief through Movement
by Stacie L. Bigelow
Amazon Price: $14.95
Customer Review: This book was not helpful at all to me. I basically have a good working knowledge about fibromyalgia and this book offered no new helpful advice; in fact, it seems to be very outdated. The author basically speaks about her own actual experience. I would try another book rather than this one, probably a book written in 2005.
