Customer Review: The pH Miracle for Diabetes
By Robert O. Young, PhD, and Shelley Redford Young

All persons who are diabetic, whether Type 1 or Type 2, or pre-diabetics ("impaired fasting glucose", meaning, BG readings from 110 - 126) like me, want to lead normal lives, eat "normal" things, be lethargic, and go about their business without regard to their BG readings. To place ourselves in such an arena, we all want a magic pill which will make us fit in with the lifestyles of 5/6th of the U.S. population. Unfortunately, no one has found such a pill, even though more and more books are written about the virtues of more and more pills, and new and improved dietary supplements.
Before I review this book, I must first give you a mini-review of The Acid Alkaline Food Guide, by Dr. Susan E. Brown and Larry Trivieri, Jr., Squareone Publishers, © 2006. This book gives a much more concise and better description of what pH balance is, how it affects your health, and the possible consequences of not keeping ones system "in balance". pH means "potential for hydrogen", a term used in chemistry, which indicates whether a solution, fluid or compound is acidic, alkaline, or neutral. pH can be measured in our bodies by testing saliva and urine or blood (pH strips are available for the first 2 tests), and if we have a heavy concentration of hydrogen in our systems, we are "acid based". The scale goes from 0 to 14; to be healthy, we should have slightly alkaline, oxygen-rich arterial blood (7.365 to 7.45 is ideal) - a reading of 7.0 is neutral.
Oxygen rich systems (alkaline based) neutralize formation of acids which might prove to be harmful. To help us stay in the neutral zone, our bodies use calcium and protein from bones, and possibly other places, to pump more alkaline to our systems in order to neutralize formation of acids, so as to keep us in balance. After the passage of time, if we fail to keep our systems in balance, and we become acid based, our bone formation will be reduced, calcium will be lost in our urine (leading to kidney stone formation), proteins will breakdown causing our muscles to waste away, our systems will be unable to repair cells, tissues and organs fully, our systems will age at an accelerated pace, more free radicals will be produced, we will be subject to increased fluid retention, and so forth.
The American diet is centered around foods that create acid-base systems. D...

The Good News Eating Plan for Type II Diabetes
by Elaine Magee
Amazon Price: $16.95
Customer Review: I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes two and a half years ago. My first response was to research diet, nutrition and exercise as means of controlling my blood sugar. I've gone through dozens of books since then, and this is the first one I've found that actually pulls the information together in a practical way that works for me.There are hundreds of diabetic cookbooks and meal planners on the market. The problem is that different people will have different responses to certain combinations of carbs, fat, and protein in their diets. This book takes the time to explain why some diabetics may need to have as little as 30% of their daily calories coming from carbohydrates, while others may need to have as much as 60% of their daily calories from carbs. The author also talks about the effect fiber has on glucose levels, and her system for balancing a diabetic diet relies on counting carbohydrates, calories, and fiber rather than exchanges.
Many other books provide menus and specific meal plans. The big problem with that approach, from my point of view, is that it can be very difficult to apply those meal plans to a family situation. This book focuses on strategies rather than specific menus, which allows me to control my diet more effectively even when I am in unexpected situations.
The Complete Diabetes Prevention Plan
by Christopher Saudek, Sandra Woodruff

Customer Review: This book, along with "Prediabetes: What You Need to Know to Keep Diabetes Away" by Gretchen Becker, is an excellent resource for someone newly concerned and rightfully a little alarmed about her/his blood glucose level testing above normal.
One of the first questions one might have is "What should I eat to prevent diabetes?" In this total life plan, which includes practical advice for weight-loss and exercise--the two imperatives of prevention, Woodruff and Saudek also provide two weeks of menus and 150 superb and healthy recipes that are easy to make.
I have served many dishes to guests who just thought I had made a terrific meal. They had no idea the recipes were from a diet book. Some tasty examples are Grilled Tuscan Tenderloin, Slow-Cooked Sicilian Pot Roast, Scallops with Peanut Sauce, Salmon with Roasted Plum Tomatoes, Cherry Bavarian, Cinnamon Peach Crisp, Dilled New Potatoes and Peas, Crab Louis Dip, Double Bran Muffins, Toasted Muesli and Citrus Vinaigrette. These have all become favorites in our menu repertoire!
My husband and I have both lost several pounds in a few months with these recipes/menus. Sandra Woodruff's other cookbooks are great too. And, don't forget the exercise. We are also walking 35 to 45 minutes every day. Making time to exercise daily and eat right is a better choice than sliding blindly into what could become a debilitating and life-threatening disease. Buy both books and start taking back your life.
The Complete Diabetic Cookbook

Customer Review: I bought this cookbook for my wife who has just been diagnosed. She has the book on our dining room table and has been thumbing through it. She has tried a couple of the 2,000 receipes, and she has recommended this book to four of her friends who are also diabetic. She can't wait to really get into it and start preparing some of the great sounding receipes. Only down side for me is that it has no pictures. However, a picture means one less receipe. My wife can mentallly "see" the dish just by looking at the receipes..I can't. It's a really good cookbook, with lots and lots of great receipes. Well worth what I paid for it..you won't be disappointed!
Cancer Recovery Eating Plan:, The: The Right Foods to Help Fuel Your Recovery
by Alison Brown Cerier Book Devel
Amazon Price:
Customer Review: This book was a huge disappointment to someone trying to take care of a cancer patient. It is, in essence, a re-hash of the familiar food pyramid guidelines that advise low-fat, low-protein and high-carbohydrate diets, organized around specific cancers. The scientific basis, if there is one, relates to epidemiologic studies of cancer risk. It might be helpful to someone who is trying to reduce their risk of various cancers by altering their dietary habits, but I doubt if this book has much more to offer than most of what has been published on that topic over the past several years. It has no scientific grounding for those who already have cancer, and may in fact suggest dietary patterns that would undermine the nutritional needs of those who are already in treatment, when fats and proteins may be friends. For someone undergoing cancer treatment, or in recovery from that ordeal, it has very little to offer that the hand-outs in your doctor's office don't already tell you.
