Customer Review: Ann Louise Gittleman is one of nutrition's superstars. It is impossible to read anything she writes and not learn something that will cause you to change your eating habits for the better. Because of one of her books, I added zinc supplements to my vegetarian diet and immediately felt more energetic. Her new book, The Gut Flush Plan, is no exception to her library of important and useful books.

This book provides a 21-Day Gut Flush Plan, with daily menus, easy recipes, nutritional information, and shopping lists. The program is designed to detoxify your body; fortify your digestive system against pathogens; flush your digestive system of toxins, pathogens, and parasites; and feed you nourishing GI-building foods. The book emphasizes building healthy intestinal flora that may have been damaged by antibiotics, steroids, other medications, dietary habits, or illnesses. It also teaches you why yeast is an issue, gluten should be avoided, dairy (except yogurt and kefir) should be avoided, colon cleansing is helpful, probiotics are important, and fully digesting food is important. The book also reinforces and explains how gluten, fructose, and lactose (milk sugar) increase the growth of harmful bacteria and yeast in the gut. Another reminder for me is that ninety percent of food allergies and sensitivities come from the most common reaction-producing foods: wheat, milk, corn, unfermented soy, and peanuts.

Customer Review: I bought this book to better help me in managing my Crohn's disease during flare-ups. I pretty much bought the book based on the title and thought it would be helpful.

The author right off the bat says that if you are going to fast, you REALLY need to fast without ANY intake of food except water, but if you are going to juice fast, this is how you do it. He concentrated more on fasting than juice fasting, which seems to make this book title mis-leading.

He also goes as far as saying that self-purging (finger down the throat) may be required to purge the body of inpurities. Whoa, time out, that is a bit extreme.

I cannot give the book just one star, because there was some good information in there about fasting symptoms and other general tid-bits, but since this author has absolutely no credentials, I would seriously question anything he suggests to do.

Customer Review: Easy to read and follow (read in 3 days) I found this book accidentally (library search - health, detox, etc) & ended up buying it right away. I was sick of feeling sick and tired all the time. Much of what he writes about a friend and former colleague of mine (pharmacist, naturalist, and nutritionist - I know what a combo, couldn't decide what she wanted to be when she grew up) taught me many of the things (sprouted nuts, processed foods & the effects, etc) I have been sharing with friends. It is not easy to break old habits that have been engrained since birth so I am not saying it will be easy but if you are committed to be healthy and feeling better, stick to it, take it slow so you make it a part of your daily routines you will see a difference. I saw the other reviews that talk about him promoting his products. Oh course he will tell you about his products, they are a part of the program. But he also tells you in the text that you can get similar herbal products from natural foods stores. I went on his web site (there's all kinds of free info, health evaluations, suggestions, recipes, etc) I emailed a question about a product I recently saw and the very same day someone called me back!!! This has never happened before. They genuinely seem to care and did not push any products or try to sell me anything.

It has more information than any other detox book I've read, and gave me invaluable new sources of cleansing and healing the body, which led me to new routes of research on the internet and finding some very excellent health web sites and products. *Spoiler* The rebounder works wonders for your health- along with so many other things Fife explained about. I highly recommend this book. I'm studying to be a Naturopathic Doctor, and did many years of research before choosing this route. This is a book I still pick up a couple of years later. I enjoy how much of the spectrum he covers. Health savvy or not, Fife walks you through changing your life, and educates you on many things every health-conscience person needs to know. Great Book !!

Customer Review: I was not into fasting until I came across "The detox mono-diet, the miracle grape cure and other cleansing diets by Christopher Vasey, and soon my fridge became home to over 15 pounds of organic grapes. Now began a minute scrutiny of the book so that I could find out firsthand what this book and the fasting regimen is all about.

Part I of the book explains the nature of illness and the role of toxins. This is followed by an introduction to the grape cure as perfected by Johanna Brandt. There is a neat summary of the steps involved in the cure, namely, elimination, fasting, role of the grapes, raw diet, and finally, hypo-toxic diet.

The physiology of fasting is explained on the basis of autolysis. When food is withheld completely, the body resorts to autolysis and extracts nutrition from the non-essential reserves like tumors, ulcers, fatty deposits, as well as toxins. Once these resources are depleted, the body will look to digesting the vital tissues and organs, but that is an extreme measure taken only when there is total and prolonged starvation. Fasting is recommended until there is a true need to eat instead of just the desire. The importance of consuming sufficient quantities of water is mentioned clearly.

During fasting autolysis and the regeneration of healthy tissue go on simultaneously. There are recommendations for assisting the various excretory organs with their function, for example, enemas for the digestive system, various herbs for the liver, kidneys and the lungs and sauna / hot baths for the skin. The more accumulated wastes in the body, the more there is a possibility of healing crises like skin rash, oozing pimple, rheumatic pains, eczemas, bronchitis and catarrh that may last from a few hours to a few days but must not be suppressed or feared. The cleansing practices must be continued throughout the fasting and into the next phases.

Now comes the mono-diet in which all foods except grapes are excluded. The physiological process of autolysis, assimilation of nutrients for tissue regeneration and elimination of toxic wastes that have been set in motion during fasting are simply carried on further for the entire period of the grape mono-diet.
