Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet by Elaine Gloria Gottschall Amazon Price: $20.66
Customer Review: Not especially comprehensive or news-breaking (much of the advice is similar to the fashionable South Beach Diet, though this book's emphasis is not on losing weight). What it comes down to is the wear and tear on the gut due to the ingestion of complex, hard-to-digest sugars, grains and starches. The more you indulge in them, the more they harm the intestine (the vicious cycle), producing nasty mucous that leads to poor malabsorption of critical nutrients. So ban the sugars, breads, pasta and stick with selective meats and vegetables.
The testimonials certainly suggest that the book has helped many--not weight problems but numerous digestive and related, serious illnesses. And $20 is a lot less to spend than the exorbitant prices for herbal "cures" for malabsorption being advertised on the internet (face it, chronic pain is "physical work," and some of us are willing to shill out any amount for a pill that promises relief as opposed to adding to our labors and fatigue). And you can get gouged even more by subscribing to one of the internet "courses" that few consumers are able to adhere to.
One thing about the book's advice puzzles me--honey is recommended as a form of pure glucose requiring little work on the part of stomach to digest. But look in a book even more popular than this one--"The Master Cleanse" by Burroughs--and you'll find honey condemned as a "toxic" food. Certainly an overstatement, but the scientific evidence suggests that honey contains at least as much fructose as it does glucose, so I'd be hesitant, despite my grandparents' advice and practice, to substitute honey whenever sugar is called for. Finally, if you intend to follow the book's regimen, be prepared to make your own yogurt--absolutely nothing of the store-bought variety meets the author's stringent requirements.
Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism by Jenny McCarthy Amazon Price: $16.29
Customer Review: I found this book extremely insightful for all special needs parents, not just parents of children with autism. The stories about hospitalizations, meds, searching for information are universal. My son doesn't have autism, he has a very rare disorder, but I was touched by this book. The bad language didn't offend me like it did others--it's Jenny McCarthy, I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. I thought it actually lent some authenticity, same Jenny, fighting the battles we all fight. Keep on fighting for your child and ours, Jenny!
The Kid-Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook: The Ultimate Guide to the Gluten-F... by Pamela Compart, Dana Laake Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: I bought the cookbook because I have a child with ADHD and other issues. The chicken nuggets are quite tasty. I've also tried the frutie smoothie. It addresses issues of the five sense with food, which is terrific because if you have a child with these issues, there are many suggestions on how to get around them. I am trying the diet for my son and we'll see how it goes. There is a fair amount of recipes, but I think that the recipe section could have been more expansive and less "information" in the front of the book. There is at least 50 pages of why you should do this diet which I'm not sure was necessary. This is why I gave four stars instead of 5. The recipes I have tried are good.
The Body Ecology Diet by Donna Gates Amazon Price: $22.46
Customer Review: Most of this book is built on old themes... juicing, avoiding sugar, etc. No news there. Much of the remainder is built on ideas that haven't passed muster with mainstream medicine... blood-type diet, food combining, colonics, alkaline/acid diets, "contracting" vs "expanding" food types, yin/yang chinese medicine ideas. I'm not saying it's all bunk... just that I would prefer more studies cited and footnoted. Like other posters here, I would say the Nourishing Traditions folks are much more solid. Also, I think the "Gut and Psychology" book is very solid. "I Was Poisoned by my Body" also has an impressive number of tips on specific tests and other products she has methodically sorted out.
But the book in question has some tips on making kefir and cultured veggies that some might think helpful if you don't mind vague recommendations that a certain vegetable "strengthens the spleen" or "cleanses the liver".
Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet: The Grain-Free, Lactose-Free, Sug... by Raman Prasad Amazon Price: $13.59
Customer Review: Raman Prasad has done it again! After Colitis & Me: A Story of Recovery and "Recipes from the Family Kitchen", Raman has put together a collection of simple but superb SCD recipes. I really appreciate the thought that has gone into crafting each recipe and love the international flavor of the recipes. Highly recommend the Sage Chicken with Portobellos, Ruma's Layered Pot Roast (divine!) and the Wild Salmon Over Vegetables. I am not on the SCD diet - but use his cookbook as a way of eating delicious, nutritious and healthy food. Thanks Raman - and I look forward to your next book!

Feast Without Yeast: 4 Stages to Better Health : A Complete Guide to Implemen... by Bruce Semon, Lori Kornblum Amazon Price: $15.61
Customer Review: WOW! JUST THE BOOK I NEEDED TO BEGIN. THE POUNDS ARE MELTING AWAY, AS I
SUBSTITUTE FERMENTED FOODS WITH HEALTHY ONES FOR ME. THIS BOOK IS EASY TO FOLLOW AND NOT AS STRICT AS SOME. THE STORIES AND FINDINGS ABOUT HOW AN OVER ABUNDANCE YEAST(CANDIDA)IN THE BODY CAN CAUSE SOME SERIOUS AILMENTS ARE AN EYE OPENER. I QUESTIONED EATING UNPROCESSED HONEY. OF COURSE LIKING MY SWEETS I HAVE BEEN USING HONEY AND THE POUNDS ARE STILL COMING OFF. WITH ANYTHING MODERATION AND BALANCE IS THE KEY.
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. I HAVE ONLY USED ONE RECIPE AS OF YET AND THE EVERYONES FAVORITE OATMEAL COOKIES WERE DELICIOUS, AND SURPRISINGLY FILLING. YEAST FREE COOKING TO ME IS BETTER THAN ANY DIET PILL, HEALTHIER AND A BETTER WAY TO GET TO A GOAL OF TOTAL HEALTH. THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR ANYONE SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR YEAST INTOLERANCE, CANDIDA, CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL.

Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies: The... by Kenneth Bock, Cameron Stauth Amazon Price: $17.13
Customer Review: I am so grateful for this book! Last summer I reached a point where I knew I'd have to take my 2 year old's healing out of the hands of traditional medicine because they couldn't offer me a CURE and I was losing my son and my sanity. After reading this book and working with a local naturopathic doctor, I am blown away by all the changes in my son's health, development, and social skills. Each step brought incremental improvements and all those little "good" moments are now the norm. Family, friends and teachers have all been impressed by his progress and I attribute it all to the things I learned from this book.
Recently my 1 year old began developing multiple allergies, but I knew the warning signs from this book and am already seeing improvements as I follow it's guidance.
I can't say enough good things about this book - I found it interesting, insightful, and well written. Thank you Dr. Bock! And thank you to all those who are doing research in this revolutionary field
