The Clear Skin Diet: A Nutritional Plan for Getting Rid of and Avoiding Acne by Alan C. Logan, Valori Treloar Amazon Price: $15.61
Customer Review: I have struggled with acne for the past 19 years. During this time, I have tried almost every imaginable medical treatment. While I found some success, my acne always returned as soon I stopped the medication. I felt that there must be some connection between diet and acne for this problem to persist. However, I was never able to find a dermatologist to support this suspicion or point me in the right direction.
The Clear Skin Diet provided me with the research and understanding I had sought all these years. The research is thoroughly presented and accessible to the general public. After incorporating many of the authors' suggestions into my daily life I have seen a significant difference in the severity of my acne! I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with acne and hopes to make a lasting change in their lives.
The Dietary Cure for Acne by Ph.D. Loren Cordain Amazon Price: Customer Review: I have eaten pretty well since I was a teenager, but when my daughter began to develop acne, we discovered this book which cut to the chase even beyond eating organically. She had already not eaten sugar for about a year when we bought the book, but it was very informative for her and so very inspiring. I have also been eating the diet pretty closely and feel great too.
As was mentioned in other reviews, it was disappointing not to have more menu suggestions and the website only had a very few offerings of recipes. I consulted the Paleo Diet book and although it was a little helpful, there was contradicting information to the Acne book (about sweet potatoes and nuts, for instance) so we weren't sure what to do in those cases. Additionally, Dr. Cordain suggests adding one food group back in at a time each month, but instead of a specific food given as an example, he gives pizza as the example which has flour and cheese together....??? two very likely candidates to cause acne.
I was also surprised that Dr. Cordain didn't even give mention to the fact that there might be a link between the problems people are experiencing with grains and the fact that we are not soaking the grains ahead of time, which breaks down phytates (the part of grains that make them quite indigestible). Soaking grains is an ancient practice as well and might very well help many people have a plant-based source of protein that there bodies can then assimilate.
The amount of protein in ratio to veggies and fruits has been a big question for me about this diet. My daughter seems to want to eat a lot of meat (mostly chicken) and fruit. And she does always seem hungry, constantly foraging.
So, although I can see that this is very helpful and finally provides a scientifically-based explanation for acne, it really seems like there is a lot more to further this research as well as being far from a complete resource. I've had to purchase many more diet books, and search out interesting recipes as the months pass. And that, too, should be mentioned: my daughter has improved skin but she is still getting some new lesions and it has been almost 3 months. A great starting point yet not quite complete.
Men's Health the Book of Muscle: The World's Most Complete Guide to Building ... by Ian King, Lou Schuler Amazon Price: Customer Review: Out of all the work out books/magazines I've read, I must say, I was quite impressed with how detailed this book was. Not only does it give you a well thought out work out plan that caters to different types of people, it also explains the science behind working out and the body which is crucial to becoming successful and muscular. The only thing I disliked was the rather anemic section on what to eat. I wish there were more sample meal plans. Other then that, the book is perfect.
Why do men tend to have darker skin than women? Why do the poorest countries have the darkest people? Why do some African American celebrities seem to get lighter over time? Why do I have a tan even when I do not go out in the sun?
If so, Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color is a must read for you.
Thienna was born in Vietnam where white skin is treasured as a characteristic of beauty. Her mother, sister and brothers had a light complexion but she did not. This caused Thienna much distress.
By the time Thienna was twelve years old, her family moved to San Francisco. She tried several things to lighten her skin but it only darkened it. Thienna came to the conclusion that scientific research did not have the answer to her questions.
Since Thienna is a nutritionist, she started her quest by investigating how nutrition influences skin color. She was able to make many connections between what people eat and their skin color. As the author continued her research and experimentation, her skin color lightened. It is important to point out that she did not use any toxic or botanically based chemicals, no drugs and no steroids.
The author gives us some very interesting facts regarding Von Luschan's Chromatic Scale, the first tool used to classify skin color.
Thienna points out that melanin is the basic building block of your skin pigment; however, its characteristics make it very difficult to study.
The author states that one of the most important determinants of skin color is the amount of sulfur in the skin. If you change the amount of sulfur in the pigment producing layers of your skin, you can change the skin color.
Another factor in determining skin color is the environment.
Thienna gives the reader detailed information on selecting a diet that is good for the skin and tells us about foods and drugs we should not even touch.
Unlocking the Mystery to Skin Color is an intriguing and interesting book. It is very obvious that the author has done much research in order to be able to write this book. This book is easy to understand and gives the reader a thorough history on skin color. Throughout the book there are sections called "Warning" where the author advises the reader on what they should not do. There are several photographs, charts and lists to help the reader understand ...
The Acne-Free Diet Plan: 30 Days to Clearer Skin by DEAN, R GOODLESS MD Amazon Price: $12.95
Customer Review: This book is worth reading just for the author's sense of humor. As far as the advice, it did truly seem to be things we've all heard before. In addition, the author includes many studies that show eating a certain thing or taking a certain supplement has not been proven to heal acne and then turns around and recommends that very item.
As far as acne treatments go, though, this diet is certainly worth a try. It seems harmless, unlike so many other acne treatments. I do think this diet would be very hard for a teenager to follow:
1. Eat fiber every day
2. Avoid peanuts and fried foods
3. Minimize salt (no table salt-especially iodized-, no lunch meats, snack chips, canned foods, etc.
4. Avoid all dairy products.
5. Eat only unprocessed complex carbohydrates (veggies & fruits). No soda, cakes, cookies, candies, white flour, etc.
6. Eat a low fat diet
7. Take the recommended vitamin and mineral supplements.
There are five other tips, but I won't go into them here. $12.95 for this samll book now seems like alot.

Herbs for Healthy Skin, Hair & Nails: Banish Eczema, Acne and Psoriasis With ... by Brigitte Mars Amazon Price: Customer Review: I felt that the book did not deliver at all what the title suggests. There is a VERY short section on eczema, and it is frankly contradictory to anything else I've read or been told by a professional. If you are buying this for the purpose of information/help with eczema, don't waste your time.
