While the mystical benefits of mantra repetition have been expounded for millennia, affirmations may be more useful to engage the conscious mind. Not only will repeating an affirmation keep the mind busy, but affirmations are a good way to program the subconscious mind, since we affirm in a language we can actually understand.
How do you create an effective affirmation? Make sure to:
1) Always state it in the positive. Describe it as a concrete goal rather than an absence. Say, “I am healthy,” not, “I’m not sick.” The subconscious mind has trouble interpreting negations. For some reason, perhaps because it’s hard to visualize, the “not” gets dropped and instead the mind hears, “I am sick.”
2) Always keep it short and simple. Long, drawn-out statements are ineffective because you won’t repeat them often enough. The key to success with affirmations is constant repetition.
3) Give your affirmation rhyme or a rhythmic quality, when possible. I believe this is one of the most powerful ways to make an affirmation effective. I discovered this technique myself and it has worked wonders in my own life and in the lives of thousands of others, whom I have taught it to. I even wrote a book about it, called Chants.
