Not all of us are visually oriented, and while we may imagine negative outcomes perfectly, we may have more trouble with positive ones. Visualization training aids can help. These days, with a program like Photoshop it’s easy to perform image magic and put your face on any body that you like. But if you don’t have Photoshop, you can get the same effect by simply cutting out a picture of a body from a magazine and taping a photo of your head to it. For our purposes you can proceed as follows. Find a model with a body that you desire. (Catalogs are a good source of them.) Cut out the picture and replace the head with yours. Stare at the picture for several minutes and then close your eyes and visualize it in your mind’s eye. If you can’t see it clearly, open your eyes and repeat the process.
How do we create those positive emotions? The easiest way is to listen to music that makes you feel good. Music can improve your mood quickly, perhaps faster than anything else. Be sure to put on a piece you really like. Listen to it a couple of times and while you are feeling great, visualize yourself with the perfect body—healthy, lean, and muscular, for instance, if that is what the perfect body means to you.
To make visualization effective, follow four steps without fail.
Step One. Visualize at least twice a day. The two best times are right when you wake up in the morning and again just before you fall asleep at night. These two work so well because your brain is in, or very close to, the alpha state. The alpha state refers to a pattern of brain frequencies and it is excellent for making an impression on your subconscious mind. Impressions we carry around just beneath awareness can profoundly affect our lives, whether they are positive or negative.
And feel that joy, or pride, and that new-found confidence. It's important to accent the visualization with the emotionalization. It’s like adding the soundtrack to the movie. Although you still have a movie without the soundtrack, the chance of it becoming a blockbuster is zero.
