Foreword
A disease of epidemic proportions is afflicting millions across the globe. The Center for Disease Control reports that it has stricken over 30% of adults and close to 20% of all children. It takes hold of its victims, killing the young and old, suffocating them slowly with cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It inflicts physical, mental, and emotional suffering on its victims, robbing them of their health and self-esteem. It is the first epidemic of this scale that is not transmitted person-to-person, or by animal or insect contact, or even through the air or water via virus or bacteria. No, this epidemic spreads through the marketing of global corporations, misinformation overload by the media and publishing industries, and the intolerable confusion of health professionals.
The epidemic is obesity.
I’ve often wondered what would happen if smallpox or polio were still prevalent in our generation. Would the Edward Jenners and Jonas Salks of our time succeed in creating a vaccine or would the executives at some biotechnology corporation bury it in favor of a more profitable lifelong treatment.
Today, companies market expensive medical procedures as remedies for obesity. It’s appalling to read about the number of people who are having major operations such as gastric bypass and lap-band surgery in a last-ditch effort to control their weight. For obesity to have reached epidemic proportions among the global population is inexcusable. This is the only disease in the history of mankind that is 100% treatable through proper nutrition. Yet it afflicts over 100 million people. As a result, the strain on our healthcare system will soon be overwhelming.
